Tyler Hall is an interesting 2011 point guard prospect to me. He is taller than most point guards at the high school level. He could be more of a combo guard, but in college he will be a point guard for most programs. He is not an outstanding shooter which is one of his major drawbacks. He does have great court vision and a very good basketball IQ. I liked what he did during his club season between his sophomore and junior year.
He did struggle against the North Central guards. Most players will though. North Central puts great ball pressure on and few players are good enough to handle it especially when they aren’t accustomed to it. I think he is more of a low-major prospect than a mid-major prospect after seeing how he played against the guard of North Central. He struggled guarding and he struggled handling the pressure. Hall didn’t finish at the basket a few times when he had opportunities to score. I thought he would handle it a little bit better than what he did.
Interesting. But in all fairness a few points should be noted…
A determination on how he handles pressure can not be made on one game, good or bad. Especially the North Central game. The North Central game was a game plagued with turnovers from several guards, for both teams.
In addition, Tyler Hall only played about 10-15 minutes in this game, at the most, because of foul trouble. That gave him about four or five 2-4 minutes spurts. Hardly enough time to 1) really get in a groove and 2) to have the ball in your hands enough for someone to make a decision about where he should play.
In reality, Tyler handles the pressure unbelievably well. He is a player that rarely gets rattled and understands how to work together to break intense pressure. Unfortunately, Danville’s schedule this year hasn’t included anyone, other than North Central, that has been able to apply any pressure. So despite playing with this kind of pressure his entire life, it really hasn’t been part of the environment since Vegas last July. Precisely the reason that picking up North Central on the schedule immediately prior to sectionals was actually absolutely brilliant.
Shock’s point was relative to that one game. I didn’t see it as wide sweeping statement, but I do think in a lot of instances one impression can go a long way with evaluators, especially college coaches who may or may not have a bigger territory to cover. That doesn’t mean you can’t disagree with him.
I would disagree with him about the scoring aspect of it. The scoring dynamics of Danville changed when Jordan Weidner moved in, where I think a lot of times last year Hall was the team’s second option behind Travis Carroll. Of course that all changes next year.

Agreed whole heartedly Jim. I certainly meant to only offer another view. Trust me, no one is more disappointed in the North Central game than he, or I for that matter. But one game doesn’t make a season and he has had several big games, including a number of double/doubles and a couple near triple doubles, while averaging only about 20 minutes a game (that will happen when you have the largest margin of victory in the state).
In addition to your comment about the scoring…It’s not only Weidner (who is an amazing and fearless player and person), but Michael Humphrey and Kyle Mackey are both very competant and capable scorers who also look to Carroll and Weidner first. All five starters are very capable of going double digits on any given night, and several of them can, and have put up 20 a few times. Tyler’s role has switched to more of a pass first, score second, putting him more in a true point guard role.
And yes…..it certainly does all change next year. In the meantime, what an exciting regional coming up this weekend huh?
Yeah, I’m not sure where I’m going yet. I may end up going to see Gary Wallace at Chesterton, then bolting up to Michigan City to see the Warsaw vs. Merrillville game.
Is Mackey a senior?
Yes, Mackey is a senior. He is a very quick, tough defender, very smart and a great shooter. We will lose 6 seniors overall. However, the junior class is very talented and full of specific role players. They obviously will lack varsity minutes because of the situation, however, will have the experience of practicing with a great senior class all this year. Dynamics will change but it should still be a fun year next year.
