Mt. Vernon trio brings back memories

Not since the days of Chad Klein and Brian Gilpin in the late 80′s and early 90′s has Mt. Vernon put as much talent on a roster as it has with DeArmond Davis, PJ Hubert, and Daniel Turner. The Hall of Fame Classic is on the Marauders’ schedule this year, which they played in December of 1990, losing to Glenn Robinson’s Gary Roosevelt Panthers.

There is a lot of length and skill among this trio, standing at 6’7″, 6’5″ and 6’6″, respectively. Hubert is a shooting guard and highly regarded as one of the best shooters in the class of 2010 (the best in my eyes). Turner, the early maturer of the bunch, has seen his game more and more move to the perimeter, and he brings a level of toughness and skill to the court, kind of a Jack of all trades approach. Davis it the newbie, starting his third year in the program, the transfer from Indianapolis Washington brings athleticism to the front court, and when he plays with energy, he’s a difference maker.

Hubert was stellar in the IBCA Top 100, as well as in the two events covered in May. If you follow our Twitter, you had more than a few updates on Hubert. Hubert visited IPFW last week, and this coming Thursday he has a visit to Western Michigan, a MAC program very active in the state of Indiana. He cites Ball State, Bellmont, and Wright State as schools which have visited the school, and those schools as well as Bradley, Columbia, Drexel, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI, Louisiana Tech, Mercer, Northern Iowa, and Princeton are calling.

Hubert has a 3.6 GPA and wishes to major in sports management.

For those familiar with former Muncie Central Bearcat, John Peckinpaugh, Turner will remind many of him. Call him whatever you want, a grinder, blue collar, a glue guy…he’s not always pretty, but at the end of the day his team usually wins. That matters, right? Turner has also visited IPFW, and he visited Western Michigan last week. He has a date set to visit Creighton, and he’s looking to visit Holy Cross. Ball State, Bellmont, East Tennessee State, and Wright State have been to Mt. Vernon to visit him, and he’s hearing from Davidson, Evansville, Indiana State, Mercer, and Missouri State.

Turner has a 4.0 with a 1230 SAT score (math/verbal), and he’d like to major in business management.

Davis has been like raw putty since moving out from Washington. His skill and focus have improved with each season, and when he plays with energy he’s very effective around the basket. He can drive a little too from mid range. He cites many of the same visitors to school to see him as the others, but he has not had a chance to make a visit yet. Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, IPFW, and Western Michigan are all calling him.

Davis has a 2.6 GPA, and he plans on majoring in business management.
