A versatile and deceptively athletic wing, VanDeWater can do a lot of things on the basketball court. He has 3pt range, can lead the break off of any defensive rebound, score in the post, and drive to set up teammates as well as his own shot. Vs. West Noble, he made things look easy, which is to say he could have pushed himself more to produce more. Hard to complain about a 16 point, 7 rebound, 6 assist and 2 block performance, but there wasn’t really a match-up his opponent could put on him.
He is a completely selfless player, and there are times when he needs to get a little more for himself. If anything, the attention he gets by the defense would be even greater. He was face guarded most of the second half in this game, and while he handed it well, looking to probe the defense a little more would have paid dividends as they did everything but double him.
One of the best things about his game is he shoots FT’s very well, so the ways he makes plays (rebounds, steals, receiving inbounds vs. press), down the stretch he can also ice the game.
